OriginOil Turns Corner to Commercialization, Unveils In-House Pilot System

Suite of breakthrough technologies now combined for end-to-end algae-to-oil production

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1, 2010 — OriginOil, Inc. (OOIL), the developer of a breakthrough technology to transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum, unveiled a comprehensive pilot system for algae growth and harvesting at an exclusive event held at its Los Angeles headquarters on Thursday, January 28, 2010.

At the event, Riggs Eckelberry, OriginOil CEO, spoke to the assembled group of core investors, celebrities and members of the press. “I’m very proud of our team that has worked so hard over the months to make our technologies work in a complete pilot system,” he said. “Until now we have been in pure research and development. Now we have turned the corner to commercialization of our technologies. It’s a historic milestone for us.”

Riggs Eckelberry’s speech and photos from the event can be viewed here: video, photos. Media coverage included KABC-TV Channel 7 in prime time, and Reuters newswire.

Sipping algae martinis and nibbling at raw treats, guests also viewed the company’s Live Extraction system, designed to “milk” algae oil without destroying algae cultures, and a bioreactor prototype specifically designed for wastewater applications.

“Algae will be local,” Eckelberry concluded. “Unlike today’s centralized energy systems, algae will go wherever the CO2 is, and that’s everywhere.” He continued, “Algae systems will be attached to wastewater plants, factories, breweries, and any other location that generates CO2. This will lead to a highly distributed energy production model and will truly deliver the jobs creation that we so urgently need in this country and the world.”

At the heart of the new system is a series of 200-gallon tanks which can be individually configured and managed for various strains, growth strategies, and lighting geometries. The tanks are now illuminated with LED light sticks submerged in icicle-like arrays. A stirrer circulates the algae slowly around the lights.

Once the algae reaches harvest concentration it is sent to the integrated extraction system, a combination of ultrasound generation and low-power electromagnetic pulsing (time-lapse video). This new system has a throughput of 5 gallons per minute, which easily keeps up with the daily output of the pilot system. After extraction, a series of settling tanks separates the oils and biomass for eventual use as fuel and valuable by-products. A water recycling system completes the loop so the process can start again. (Diagram)

The company’s Dynamic Control System manages the operation of the growth phase, releasing CO2 and other nutrients as the algae needs it. While bottled CO2 is currently used, an in-house generator is planned to test real-world scenarios where exhaust gas is processed for its CO2.

    About OriginOil, Inc.

OriginOil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world’s oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce “new oil” from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products, such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents, without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil-producing feedstock, such as corn and sugarcane, often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies. Department of Energy Grants BlueFire Approval for Site Change

IRVINE, CA (October 15, 2009) – BlueFire Ethanol Fuels, Inc. (OTC BB:BFRE.OB – News), a company focused on changing the world’s transportation fuel paradigm through the production of ethanol from non-food cellulosic wastes, has announced the strategic relocation of its second planned biorefinery to Fulton, Mississippi.

After having been awarded a $40 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a second planned facility in California, BlueFire Ethanol, in 2007, began development and licensing work to build their second biorefinery plant.

“Navigating the development and licensing process in California in a time effective manner coupled with the challenging business climate in the State convinced BlueFire to petition the DOE for a site change to Mississippi,” stated Arnold Klann, BlueFire’s President and CEO.  “We determined the Fulton site located in north eastern Mississippi was best suited to fulfill our requirements for our second biorefinery plant after studying various locations in several states over the past year”

“The DOE has been supportive and helpful in BlueFire’s project development activities targeted at fulfilling the current administration’s goal of rapid deployment of cellulosic biofuel projects. DOE’s approval of the site change should help BlueFire remain on track for executing our business growth strategy,” added Mr. Klann.
The Fulton, MS project will allow BlueFire to utilize green and wood wastes available in the region as feedstock for the ethanol plant that will be designed to produce approximately 18 million gallons of ethanol per year. BlueFire is currently receiving funding under the $40 million DOE grant it was awarded in 2007 for the development of the plant in Fulton, Mississippi.

BlueFire has completed a 20-month licensing process and is currently awaiting the final financing needed to break ground on its shovel-ready, fully permitted ethanol biorefinery in Lancaster, CA. The Lancaster facility will use post-sorted cellulosic wastes diverted from Southern California’s landfills to produce approximately 3.9 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol per year.

    About BlueFire Ethanol Fuels
BlueFire Ethanol Fuels, Inc. was established to deploy a commercially ready, patented and proven Concentrated Acid Hydrolysis Technology Process for the profitable conversion of cellulosic waste materials (“Green Waste”) to ethanol, a viable alternative to gasoline. BlueFire is the only cellulose-to-ethanol company worldwide with demonstrated production of ethanol from urban trash (post-sorted MSW), rice and wheat straws, wood waste and other agricultural residues.

BlueFire is one of four ethanol companies awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to construct ethanol production facilities. Unlike remote corn ethanol production plants, BlueFire’s biorefineries will be located near markets with high demand for ethanol. This should dramatically reduce delivery costs and increase biofuel supplies, while providing a unique waste processing technology to help America’s cities better manage the increasing problem of overflowing landfills. CSX Announces Commitment to Cut CO2 Emissions by Eight Percent

CSX reduces EmissionsI am very pleased to report that my friends over at CSX, have committed to a very significant reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions.
Just to put this into perspective an 8% GHG reduction for CSX may sound small but given the size of their operations it equates to the following amazing numbers:
    1) 2.4 million tons of emissions removed from the air.
    2) The equivalent of taking 441,000 cars off the road each year.
    3) Burning 5,598,000 fewer barrels of oil.

Kudos to all of my friends at CSX, you guys are amazing.

    -Matthew

    Official release below:

CSX’s Emissions Reduction Goal is First-Ever Commitment to EPA from a Major Transportation Provider

Jacksonville, Fla. – June 29, 2009 – CSX today announced a plan to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with its vast and economically vital train operations by 8% per revenue ton mile by 2011. The company made its commitment as part of its participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders Program, a voluntary program for businesses to inventory and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

CSX’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the Climate Leaders Program is the first ever from a major U.S. transportation provider. CSX’s commitment will reduce C02 emissions by 2.4 million tons – the equivalent of taking 441,000 cars off the road each year, or burning 5,598,000 fewer barrels of oil.

“Freight rail is the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly surface transportation option. We are pleased to enhance these benefits with our firm commitment to reduce CSX’s carbon footprint,” said Michael J. Ward, Chairman, President and CEO of CSX. “The Climate Leaders Partnership shows that by working together, business and government can serve our nation’s economic needs while improving our environment.”

In CSX’s non-railroad operations, the company plans to use building space more efficiently, improve HVAC systems, and install energy-efficient lighting and automatic computer-shutdown software.

“As we work to strengthen our nation’s infrastructure, stimulate the economy and compete in a global marketplace, investment in freight railroads will be critical,” said Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell. “CSX’s commitment to improving the environmental efficiency of its operations will further drive improvement in what is already one of the most environmentally friendly forms of surface transportation and strengthen our country’s position as a global leader of a sustainable economy.”

Since 1980, the railroad industry has invested more than $1 billion to upgrade its fleet with more efficient, Tier II clean air locomotives and has improved locomotive fuel efficiency by over 80%. By the end of 2009, an additional 1,200 CSX locomotives will be upgraded to further reduce emissions and lower fuel consumption by nearly 10 million gallons. CSX has a long standing commitment to air quality and clean operations.

CSX Transportation Inc. is a principal operating company of CSX Corporation. CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the leading transportation companies, providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services. The company’s transportation network spans 21,000 miles with service to 23 eastern states and the District of Columbia, and connects to more than 70 ocean, river, and lake ports. More information about CSX Corporation and its subsidiaries is available at the company’s web site, www.csx.com.
